- What are the best SUVs and cars to use for a caravan in Playa?
For the Orange County ➔ San Francisco ➔ Reno ➔ Black Rock City route and entry into the alkaline desert, the best options are:
Full-size 4×4 SUVs: Toyota 4Runner, Sequoia, Land Cruiser, Ford Expedition, Chevrolet Tahoe/Suburban, Jeep Grand Cherokee. This is the perfect balance between cross-country ability, capacity and comfort on a long journey.
Pickups: Toyota Tundra/Tacoma, Ford F-150/F-250, RAM 1500. Best choice for hauling heavy camp gear, tents, water, generators and workshop supplies.
Minivans and Passenger Vans (4WD/AWD): Mercedes Sprinter (especially 4×4), Ford Transit, Toyota Sienna AWD. Excellent for transporting people and delicate equipment (audio and video equipment for reporting).
⚠️ Important due to technical condition:
Ground clearance and all-wheel drive (AWD/4WD): Desirable, as Playa Dust clogs the knots, and during unexpected rains the desert turns into dense clay.
Air Filters: Be sure to bring a spare air filter and cabin filter – they will need to be changed immediately after leaving Black Rock City.
Dust protection: Cars with climate control and good door seals will protect your equipment and personal belongings.
2. I don’t have an off-road vehicle, but I want to go with you. What should I do?
Join our “Caravan Matching” via the Luma form! We have drivers with spacious trucks and SUVs who need partners to share driving duties, split fuel costs, or help with gear. We organize the crews at checkpoints in Orange County, San Francisco, and Reno.
3. Why do we form a convoy (caravan)?
Traveling in a convoy ensures safety, resource savings, and a guaranteed spot for the camp:
Shared expenses: Pooling funds to buy fuel, water, and groceries in Reno.
Mutual assistance: If someone gets stuck or breaks down on the road, the team is right there to help.
Coordinated entry to the open camping area: We enter the Playa together to secure a unified space for our shared camp right away and position our vehicles to create a windbreak.
🎟️ Tickets and Camp Participation
4. How does the ticket pool work?
The working group manages a small pool of tickets that we allocate among active participants. Priority is given to:
Drivers with vehicles spacious enough for the caravan.
Makers and artisans willing to host daily workshops and performances.
Camp perimeter builders and the technical team (solar power, lighting, kitchen).
Field archivists and camera operators.
If you already have a ticket, you can simply join our camp and caravan!
🎨 Co-creation, Crafts, and Atmosphere
5. I don’t build solar panels, and I don’t know how to drive a truck. How can I contribute?
In our camp, the ability to bake bread, weave, tell stories, or play an acoustic instrument is valued just as highly as engineering skills!
We are building the “Living Axis Mundi”—an art installation created by the participants themselves over the course of the week.
You can:
Host a workshop on your craft (embroidery, weaving, painting, carving).
Prepare a traditional dish for the camp table.
Teach participants beautiful words or poetry in your native language.
Help process field notes and photos for our report.
6. What should I bring for the workshops?
Bring the materials you work with: your favorite threads, willow vines, fabrics, spices, crafting tools, or musical instruments. Our camp provides a communal tent, a shaded area, tables, and the attention of guests from across the Playa.

7. How can I become a “Remote Contributor” if I’m not traveling to the desert?
You can join our team from anywhere in the world:
Digital Archivists: Help with transcribing audio recordings, selecting photos, and publishing expedition journals on the website.
Content Creators: Submit your digital artwork, audio collages, or recorded stories and poems; we will broadcast them and weave them into the art installation right there on the Playa.
8. Where can I follow reports from the Playa?
All the latest field journals, photo galleries, and audio recordings will be published in real-time (subject to connectivity) on our dedicated page BM2026 and on our Telegram/Substack channel.
